Amoxicillin is one of the best forms of antibiotic available today. It is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria, including: infections of the ear, nose, and throat (pneumonia, bronchitis); infections of the genitourinary tract; infections of the skin and skin structure; infections of the lower respiratory tract; gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated (ano-genital and urethral infections) in male and females.

Amoxicillin is also used before some surgery or dental work to prevent infection. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers. Amoxicillin may also be used for other purposes not listed here.

Amoxicillin acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall and stopping the growth of bacteria.

Amoxicillin is available in capsules.

Amoxicillin is usually taken every 8 hours (three times a day). It can be taken with or without food.

The chewable tablets should be crushed or chewed thoroughly before they are swallowed. The tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole and taken with a full glass of water.

Take Amoxicillin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less Amoxicillin or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Amoxicillin without talking to your doctor. To clear up your infection completely, continue taking Amoxicillin for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Stopping Amoxicillin too soon may cause bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics.


Amoxicillin may be taken every 8 hours or every 12 hours, depending on the strength of the product prescribed.

Patients should be counseled that antibacterial drugs, including Amoxicillin, should only be used to treat bacterial infections. They do not treat viral infections (e.g., the common cold). When Amoxicillin is prescribed to treat a bacterial infection, patients should be told that although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may: (1) decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment, and (2) increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by Amoxicillin or other antibacterial drugs in the future.

Diarrhea is a common problem caused by antibiotics which usually ends when the antibiotic is discontinued. Sometimes after starting treatment with antibiotics, patients can develop watery and bloody stools (with or without stomach cramps and fever) even as late as 2 or more months after having taken the last dose of the antibiotic. If this occurs, patients should contact their physician as soon as possible.


In case of overdosage, discontinue medication, treat symptomatically, and institute supportive measures as required. If the overdosage is very recent and there is no contraindication, an attempt at emesis or other means of removal of drug from the stomach may be performed. A prospective study of 51 pediatric patients at a poison-control center suggested that overdosages of less than 250 mg/kg of Amoxicillin are not associated with significant clinical symptoms and do not require gastric emptying.

Interstitial nephritis resulting in oliguric renal failure has been reported in a small number of patients after overdosage with Amoxicillin.

Crystalluria, in some cases leading to renal failure, has also been reported after Amoxicillin overdosage in adult and pediatric patients. In case of overdosage, adequate fluid intake and diuresis should be maintained to reduce the risk of Amoxicillin crystalluria.

Renal impairment appears to be reversible with cessation of drug administration. High blood levels may occur more readily in patients with impaired renal function because of decreased renal clearance of Amoxicillin. Amoxicillin may be removed from circulation by hemodialysis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and to characterize the implicated genes in Escherichia coli isolated from commercial fish and seafood. Fish and seafood samples (n=2663) were collected from wholesale and retail markets in Seoul, Korea between 2005 and 2008. Gene cassettes of classes 1 and 2 integrons were further characterized by amplicon sequencing. The tetracycline resistance genes tetB and tetD were found in 29 (41.4%) isolates and 14 (20%) isolates, respectively. The beta-lactam resistance gene, bla(TEM) was found in 15 (21.4%) isolates. The aminoglycoside resistance gene, aadA was found in 18 (25.7%) isolates. Class 1 integron was detected in 41.4% (n=29) of the isolates, while only 2.9% (n=2) of the isolates were positive for the presence of class 2 integron. Two different gene cassettes arrangements were identified in class 1 integron-positive isolates: dfrA12-aadA2 (1.8 kb, five isolates) and aadB-aadA2 (1.6 kb, four isolates). One isolate containing class 2 integron presented the dfrA1-sat-aadA1 gene cassette array. These data suggest that commercial fish and seafood may act as the reservoir for multi-resistant bacteria and facilitate the dissemination of the resistance genes.

Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) are integral players in bacterial cell division, and their catalytic activities can be monitored with β-lactam-containing chemical probes. Compounds that target a single PBP could provide important information about the specific role(s) of each enzyme, making identification of such molecules important. The examined β-lactams exhibited diverse PBP selectivities, with amdinocillin (mecillinam) showing selectivity for PBP2, aztreonam, piperacillin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, and ceftriaxone for PBP3, and amoxicillin and cephalexin for PBP4. The remaining β-lactams did not block any PBPs in the DC2 strain of E. coli or inhibited more than one PBP at all examined concentrations in this Gram-negative organism.

All of the cases were women, age ranging between 25-67 years old. The patients were from areas where there is high risk of CCHF. CCHF were ruled out in these patients by agent specific polymerase chain reaction and IgM results. All of the patients were clinically diagnosed as Lyme disease since they had lesions compatible with erythema migrans. B. burgdorferi total antibodies investigated by ELISA (Zeus Scientific Inc., USA) were found positive in all patients. Since Western blot method could not be performed, positive serologic results have not be confirmed. However, the diagnosis of Lyme disease was done according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria and all of the cases have recovered following treatment with antibiotics (cefuroxime axetil or sulbactam ampicillin or amoxicillin clavulanic acid). Anaphylactic reactions are often induced by drugs, and the most frequent ones are penicillin derivates. The concurrence of acute coronary syndrome with hypersensitivity and anaphylactic or anaphylactoid Augpen 625 Tablets reactions constitutes the Kounis syndrome. We report a case of a coronary stent thrombosis with a fatal outcome complicating an anaphylactic shock induced by amoxicillin-clavulanic acid association. One hour after the first drug intake, she developed an anaphylactic shock with acute constricting chest pain. She received intravenous hydrocortisone and was transferred to emergency department. The patient received epinephrine intravenously with fluid perfusion and oxygen. Electrocardiogram showed Pardee waves in the anterior precordial leads. Cardiac enzyme levels (troponin I) were disturbed. The patient was transferred to the coronary care unit with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. The coronary angiography revealed anterior interventricular stent thrombosis. The patient experienced a cardiogenic shock with an important hemodynamic repercussion, and she died few hours later despite emergency care. The responsibility of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid association was retained in the genesis of this anaphylactic shock in front of a suggestive delay, a compatible evolution and a high semiotic score. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid use may cause Kounis syndrome. The use of epinephrine is a challenging decision. We suggest that Kounis syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome.
