Ceftum (Ceftin)

Rating of sales:

Ceftum is used for treating bacterial infections (sinus, skin, lung, urinary tract, ear, and throat). It may also be used to treat Lyme disease and gonorrhea. Ceftin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall so that the wall ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.

Also known as:  Ceftin.

Ceftum eye drops and eye ointment are used to treat bacterial eye infections. Eye infections are a common cause of conjunctivitis. In conjunctivitis, your eye becomes inflamed, feels gritty, and may water more than usual. The white of your eye may look red, and your eyelids can become swollen and stuck together with a discharge when you wake up in the morning. Only one eye may be infected to begin with, but it often spreads to both eyes.

Most cases of infective conjunctivitis clear within a few days without treatment. For more severe infections, or for infections which do not clear on their own, an antibiotic eye drop or ointment such as Ceftum can be helpful.

Ceftum works by helping to kill the bacteria which are causing the infection. It is available on prescription. You can also buy the drops and the ointment from a pharmacy, without a prescription, if it is for conjunctivitis in an adult or a child over 2 years of age. Do not use Ceftum eye drops or ointment for a child under 2 years old, unless it has been prescribed by a doctor.

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

You may take Ceftum tablets with or without meals.

Ceftum oral suspension (liquid) must be taken with food.

Shake the oral liquid well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

If you switch from using the tablet form to using the oral suspension (liquid) form of Ceftum, you may not need to use the same exact dosage in number of milligrams. The medication may not be as effective unless you use the exact form and strength your doctor has prescribed.

Use this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Ceftum will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

This medication can cause you to have false results with certain medical tests, including urine glucose (sugar) tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using Ceftum.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include seizure (black-out or convulsions).

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) away from moisture and heat. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur during treatment or within several months after treatment with Ceftum. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.

The tablet and oral suspension forms of Ceftum are not equivalent. Do not substitute one for the other.

Ceftum only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).

Be sure to use Ceftum for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.

Long-term or repeated use of Ceftum may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.

Diabetes patients - Ceftum may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Ceftum. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).

Lab tests, including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell count, may be performed while you use Ceftum. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

Ceftum should not be used in children younger 3 months; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Ceftum while you are pregnant. Ceftum is found in breast milk. Do not breastfeed while taking Ceftum.

Our data show that cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins may be as high as 10.9% for first-generation cephalosporins and 1.1% for third-generation cephalosporins, possibly due to the involvement of similar side chains. Patch tests are a useful diagnostic tool to assess cross-reactivity, but a graded challenge is mandatory because a negative patch test does not always mean tolerability.

A total of 94 Streptococcus pneumoniae (Pnc) and 113 Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) were isolated. Thirty-eight Pnc and 35 Hi were isolated in the 63 patients with recently treated AOM. Pnc as a single isolate was more prevalent in patients recently treated with antibiotics (27 of 63, 43%) than among those not recently treated (32 of 118, 27%, P = 0.047). The MIC50 values of penicillin, cefaclor and cefuroxime axetil for Pnc were significantly higher in the pneumococci isolated from patients recently treated than among those isolated from patients not recently treated with antibiotics (0.38, 3 and 0.75 microg/ml vs. 0.094, 0.38 and 0.12 microg/ml, respectively). Seventy-nine percent of Pnc isolates in the recently treated group had MIC for penicillin of >0.1 microg/ml vs. only 47% in those not recently treated (P < 0.05). The respective figures for MIC >0.5 microg/ml of cefaclor were 79% vs. 41% for the recently treated and not recently treated groups (P < 0.001); cefuroxime MIC >0.5 microg/ml was found in 61 and 25%, respectively (P = 0.001).

Experts in the management of otitis media and the Drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae Therapeutic Working Group were convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to respond to changes in antimicrobial susceptibility among pneumococci. The objective was to provide consensus recommendations for the management of acute otitis media (AOM) and for the surveillance of drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae. After summarizing published and unpublished data from the scientific literature and the experience of the panel members, the group concluded that oral amoxicillin should remain the first-line antimicrobial agent for treating AOM. For patients with clinically defined treatment failure after 3 days of therapy, useful alternative agents include amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefuroxime axetil, and intramuscular ceftriaxone. The group also made recommendations to improve surveillance and to obtain antimicrobial susceptibility patterns for local geographic areas.

The in vitro activity of ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefadroxil, cefaclor, cefuroxime (axetil), co-trimoxazole, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, erythromycin, and roxithromycin was tested against unselected isolates of S. pneumoniae (70), H. influenzae (93), and M. catarrhalis (46), cultured from clinically significant sputum samples of general practice patients. All isolates of S. pneumoniae were highly susceptible to ampicillin; cefadroxil and cefaclor were markedly less active on a weight basis; resistance was only observed with co-trimoxazole (4.3%), doxycycline (5.7%), and erythromycin (2.9%); however, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin showed median MICs (MIC50), that were only one dilution below breakpoint. Beta-lactamase was detected in 14.0% of H. influenzae isolates; all isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefaclor, and cefuroxime (axetil), although MICs were generally higher for cefaclor; the highest activity was exhibited by ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin; apart from cefadroxil, erythromycin, and roxithromycin, that showed only marginal activity, resistance was observed with co-trimoxazole (4.3%) and doxycycline (1.1%). All (including 71.7% of beta-lactamase producing) isolates of M. catarrhalis were susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefaclor and cefuroxime (axetil), although MICs were markedly lower for amoxicillin/clavulanate; ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin showed the lowest MICs; resistance was only observed with cefadroxil (2.2%). In conclusion, the antimicrobial agents showing the most uniformly high in vitro activity against the 3 common community respiratory pathogens tested in the present study, were amoxicillin/clavulanate and, to a lesser extent, cefuroxime (axetil).

A 49-year-old male developed bloody diarrhoea whilst on a visit to India. Sigmoidoscopy and rectal biopsy showed acute colitis. Shigella dysentery type I was isolated from stool culture. Cytotoxin production by the organism was demonstrated. The patient developed acute renal failure, thrombocytopaenia and microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia. He required mechanical ventilation, haemodialysis, blood transfusion and antibiotic therapy and achieved a complete recovery. This is an unusual case of haemolytic uraemic syndrome complicating shigellosis in an adult.

The pharmacokinetics of cefuroxime axetil were studied by a model-independent method Tab Omnix 200 Mg after a single oral dose corresponding to 500 mg of cefuroxime in 28 subjects grouped according to renal functions. Creatinine clearance (Clcr) was > 85, 50 to 84, 15 to 49, and < 15 mL/min in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. The V(area)/F (distribution volume/bioavailability) was independent of renal function, the average being 0.82 +/- 0.27 L/kg. Both Cls/F (systemic clearance/bioavailability) and Clr (renal clearance) decreased linearly with the decrease in Clcr. The T1/2 (serum half-life) was 1.4 +/- 0.33 h, 2.4 +/- 0.65 h, 4.6 +/- 2.32 h, and 16.8 +/- 10.2 h in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. A significant correlation existed between kel (elimination rate constant) and Clcr (r = 0.88, P < 0.01). kel of cefuroxime can be predicted by: kel (h-1) = 0.0046 x Clcr + 0.0108. Based on these data, modification of dosing schedule is not deemed necessary when Clcr is above 50 mL/min/1.73 m2, while the standard individual dose should be given every 12 h when Clcr is 49-30 mL/min/1.73 m2, every 24 h when it is 29-10 mL/min/1.73 m2, and every 48 h when it is below 10 mL/min/1.73 m2.

In children, acute bacterial rhinosinusitis is a common infection and although rare, carries a potential for serious, life threatening complications. Bacterial rhinosinusitis usually follows a viral infection or allergic rhinitis. Early, effective antibacterial therapy is essential to shorten the duration of infection and illness, to diminish mucosal damage, and to prevent contiguous infectious involvement of the orbit or central nervous system. Because the signs and symptoms of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis are similar to those of viral upper respiratory tract infection, establishing an accurate diagnosis in children poses a clinical challenge. Infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae accounts for 30-66% of episodes of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis in children. Other important pathogens include Haemophilus influenzae (20-30%) and Moraxella catarrhalis (12-28%). In selecting initial antimicrobial therapy, priority should be given to drugs with activity against S. pneumoniae. The oral agents that currently offer the greatest activity against this pathogen include amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefdinir, cefpodoxime proxetil, and cefuroxime axetil; all are considered appropriate for the initial treatment of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis in children. Amoxicillin is customarily used as first-line therapy for uncomplicated acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. For patients who are allergic to amoxicillin, second- or third-generation oral cephalosporins may be Azitromicina 500 Mg used as first-line therapy. Clarithromycin has been suggested as an alternative to amoxicillin or cephalosporins in beta-lactam allergic patients. Clindamycin may also be indicated as first-line treatment in patients who have culture-proven penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae. If no clinical response occurs within 72 hours, the choice of a second-line antibiotic is governed by the drug's known antimicrobial efficacy, resistance patterns, dosing schedules, the potential for compliance, and knowledge of the patient's drug allergies. High-dose amoxicillin-clavulanate (90 mg/kg/d of the amoxicillin component) has been recommended for high-risk children (e.g. those in day care, and those who have recently received antibiotics) who show no improvement after treatment with the usual dose of amoxicillin (45 mg/kg/d). Broad-spectrum, third-generation oral cephalosporins, such as cefdinir, should be considered as second-line agents when standard therapy has failed or when patients show hypersensitivity to penicillin. Intramuscular ceftriaxone may be appropriate for patients who fail on a second course of antibiotic treatment.

Serum concentrations of cefuroxime ranged from 2.8 to 7.3 microg/ml and were consistent with the results of previous pharmacokinetic study. These results show that serum concentrations of cefuroxime remain above the MIC90 (2.0 microg/ml) for Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis for at least 5 h (42%) of the 12-h dosing interval. Cefuroxime was detected in 14 of 17 (82%) middle ear effusion samples and ranged from 0.2 to 3.6 microg/ml, indicating that cefuroxime penetrates well into the Cifran Suspension middle ear.

Acute maxillary sinusitis is a common condition requiring broad-spectrum Cefuroxime Axetil Tablet Use therapy to prevent development of chronic disease. A randomised, double-blind, multicentre study was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of cefuroxime axetil 250 mg twice daily (n = 185) and clarithromycin 250 mg twice daily (n = 185), both administered for 10 days, in the treatment of patients with acute sinusitis. Efficacy was determined by assessment of clinical response at post-treatment and follow-up, and by radiological assessment at pre-treatment and follow-up. Assessment of days absent from work due to illness was also made. In the cefuroxime axetil group, 169/185 (91%) patients were cured/improved at post-treatment, as were 172/185 (93%) patients receiving clarithromycin and, of these, 137/169 (81%) and 143/172 (83%) maintained their response at follow-up. Follow-up radiography showed a reduction in incidence of air fluid level and/or opacification from 96% to 15% (cefuroxime axetil) and from 96% to 11% (clarithromycin), and a decrease in frequency of mucosal thickening from 58% to 28% (cefuroxime axetil) and from 56% to 29% (clarithromycin). Only 10% of patients in either group experienced adverse events and days absent from work were comparable. This study demonstrated clinical equivalence between twice-daily cefuroxime axetil and clarithromycin, both treatments being effective and well tolerated.

In France the current consensus for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia is based on Ceftin 10 Mg the French Society for Infectious Diseases 1991 guidelines. In healthy adults without signs of severe disease, oral amoxicillin is recommended at the dose of 3 g per day for 8 to 10 days. This empirical choice is warranted by the prevalence of pneumococcal infections, found as causal agents in half to two-thirds of the bacteriologically proven cases. The 3 g dose is recommended due to the increasing risk of penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae with MIC > 1 microgram/ml and exceptionally > 2 micrograms/ml. Clinical experience has shown that with a threshold at 2 micrograms/ml, 3 g of amoxicillin is a safe and sure choice. The duration is undoubtedly too long for most patients, but is a prudent measure due to the lack of clinical signs distinguishing between patent infection and its prolongation by inflammatory processes. Indiscriminate prescription of amoxicillin alone is however unacceptable as aminopenicillin is not effective against all microbial agents responsible for community-acquired pneumonia. The risk of selecting resistant strains is very real. Use of a large spectrum antibiotic could be indicated as first line treatment in patients with risk factors (underlying chronic disease, institutionalization, exposure to Gram negatives or S. aureus). For such patients, combination with a beta-lactamase inhibitor (coamoxiclav) or a cephalosporin with a MIC similar to that for penicillin G (cefpodoxime proxetil, cefuroxime axetil) could be recommended. In case of severe disease, Legionella pneumophila must be taken into consideration, implicating adjuction of a macrolide. Wide spectrum fluoroquinolones such as the soon to be available trovafloxacin offer a safe alternative, covering the main microorganisms responsible for community acquired pneumonia. Widespread use would however increase the risk of microbial resistance. In the current epidemiological situation in France, prescription of an aminopenicillin alone for alveolar community-acquired pneumonia in healthy adults remains the gold standard for first line therapy.
